A film adaptation of Gilles Perrault’s best‑selling book recounting the 1976 trial and execution of Christian Ranucci, a young man convicted—on highly questionable evidence—of murdering an eight‑year‑old girl in southern France. The publicity generated by the book and film contributed to the abolition of capital punishment in France in 1981.
