George and Betty, a middle‑class English couple, have just settled into a large Edwardian house in London and are planning a party. Ten days later their furniture is still missing—sent to Carlisle by mistake—three of the four toilets won’t work, and ceiling cracks are appearing. Still, their resolve to enjoy the evening remains unshaken.
