Italian climber Carel is determined to become the first to reach the summit of the Matterhorn. Recognizing the difficulty, he initially agrees to join forces with British alpinist Whymper. However, an intrigue forces them to abandon the partnership, and each leads a separate expedition on the same day, culminating in a tragic disaster.
