Martin Kaas lives at Næsbygård with his grandson, an avid horseman. When his horse loses a shoe, the boy visits blacksmith Mortensen and meets his foster daughter Elise. Mortensen is cruel, and with manager Hermensen runs shady deals threatening the farm. Elise befriends the lonely boy, but he is later kidnapped and a ransom demanded for his return.
