After arriving in Denmark too late to see his dying mother, Anders learns from her lawyer that he is the illegitimate son of a wealthy estate owner. He assumes a false identity, takes a job on the sprawling farm, and becomes entangled in a love triangle, first with a maid and later with an ambitious gold‑digger.
