During the Siege of Leningrad in 1942, Nina Voronova flees the city, leaving her young son alone in a freezing apartment. He is discovered by Katya, a teenage neighbor, who pretends he is her brother to secure additional food rations. Alexey Voronov, the boy's father, eventually returns to Leningrad and discovers the situation, learning that his son has been cared for by Katya.
