What Is The Burning Court About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of The Burning Court (1962) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

In an ancient château shrouded in mystery and whispered curses, Mathias Desgrez lives immersed in the study of occult arts, his decades-long fascination with the supernatural casting long shadows over his household. The castle itself seems to breathe with secrets, its walls holding centuries of dark history that few dare to question. Practicing his rituals alongside longtime associate Dr. Hermann, Mathias has created an atmosphere thick with possibility and unspoken dread, where the line between the arcane and the all-too-human blurs with each passing day.

Among those drawn into Mathias's orbit are historian Michel Boissard and his wife Marie D'Aubray Boissard, descendants of the notorious Madame de Brinvilliers, whose infamous legacy hangs heavy over the proceedings. They are joined by Mathias's nephews Marc and Stéphane Desgrez, each arriving with eyes fixed on their inheritance. The household grows more volatile with Lucy Desgrez, Marc's wife, who harbors ambitions of her own, and Myra Schneider, Mathias's personal nurse, whose presence adds another layer of complexity to an already tangled web of relationships.

When Inspector Krauss arrives to investigate the strange happenings within the château's walls, he finds a household where everyone seems to have something to hide. Family members circle one another with barely concealed suspicion, and the fragile calm of the manor begins to show cracks. Long-held secrets, simmering rivalries, and occult overtones create an environment where inheritance, desire, and fear collide in unexpected ways.

The meticulously paced mystery invites viewers into a world where supernatural beliefs and human motivations intertwine, and where every character carries burdens that may prove impossible to escape.
