Captain John Newton commands a slave ship off Nigeria’s coast, his faith and conscience at odds with the brutal trade. He goes ashore, embarking on a painful path toward redemption that ends in tragedy but plants the seed for greater purpose. The enslaved captives’ mournful anthem foreshadows the hymn that will become “Amazing Grace.”
