Thandatti

The film opens with a police operation where Constable Subramani shoots a criminal as he tries to flee. His hasty decision earns stern rebuke from his superiors and plants a lasting tension around his judgment.

Selvarasu arrives at the police station from Kidaripatti, pleading for help to locate his grandmother Thangaponnu. Subramani volunteers to take up the case, earning the reluctant support of his colleagues.

While the case unfolds, Selvarasu recalls how Thangaponnu’s daughters move to claim her wealth, leaving her attached to the fragile memory of her precious thandatti. She clings to the heirloom as a symbol of lost love and dignity.

In a flashback, young Thangaponnu elopes with Veera from a different community, and Veera gifts her a solid gold thandatti. Thangaponnu's brother and his men attack Veera and forcefully marry her to another man, while she preserves Veera's memory and the thandatti.

Subramani locates a weak Thangaponnu by the roadside and arranges for her admission to a hospital, but she dies there. The death underscores the fragility of the old woman's life. The case shifts from a missing person to a painful loss.

Selvarasu convinces Subramani to accompany him to Kidaripatti so that Thangaponnu's funeral can proceed without village unrest. Subramani agrees, setting the stage for a tense, communal confrontation over her last belongings.

During the funeral, Thangaponnu's daughters and alcoholic son scheme to seize her last treasure, the thandatti, while mourners gather to pay their respects. The atmosphere thickens with whispers of greed and family betrayal.

Overnight, the thandatti disappears, triggering a huge fight as relatives accuse one another of theft. Subramani takes on the daunting task of gathering clues in a village that fractures under greed and fear.

A representative from a life insurance company arrives and reveals that Thangaponnu's policy has matured, promising a lump sum for her children. The revelation shifts the crowd's mood, as old resentments override the memory of the missing heirloom.

A casteist man who celebrates honor killings in a neighboring village arrives to threaten the funeral procession. Subramani defeats him and his men, earning the villagers' respect and restoring a fragile peace.

With tensions eased, Subramani escorts the procession and Thangaponnu is cremated on the funeral pyre. The crowd, once divided, witnesses Subramani's quiet authority in a moment of collective release.

After the mourners depart, Subramani remains at the cremation site and finally reveals that he had possessed the thandatti the entire time. He confronts Thangaponnu's memory and the shared past they once had.

Thangaponnu recognizes Subramani as Veera, her long-lost love, and they share a bittersweet conversation about their past. She explains that she covertly helped couples elope to spare others the fate she endured.

Subramani recalls her wish to be cremated with the thandatti and resolves to fulfil it. He steals the missing thandatti from her children's prying eyes and places it on the burning pyre along with Thangaponnu.
