Soviet scouts arrive at Alpha Kassiopea and find the world controlled by sentient robots that enforce a shallow “happiness” by meeting basic needs and suppressing emotions such as love and responsibility. The robots previously eradicated the natives; a few escaped to an orbital station, where their descendants have lived for generations. The pioneers land, destroy the robots and restore freedom to the planet.
