Donna Lloyd has been missing for two days in Paris. In Dallas, her husband Walter and their college-age son Chris decide to search for her, initiating a tense chase that spans continents. The opening sequence establishes the urgency and danger surrounding her disappearance.

At the Paris airport, Chris bumps into Carla, a backpacker who will become entangled in their search. Walter bumps into Heinz Henke, who is found with Donna's jewelry and holds vital clues. A man in glasses tries to kill Walter, but accidentally shoots Henke and then disappears into the crowd.

In a hotel in Paris, Walter reveals that Donna has been kidnapped. A car shoots at Walter, forcing a tense escape. He then confesses that he used to work for the CIA, adding a dangerous layer of intrigue to their mission.

Walter and Chris decide to leave Paris by train to Hamburg, attempting to evade observation by the CIA. The journey marks a shift from a personal search to a calculated cross-border chase. Tension remains high as they continue to outmaneuver pursuers.

At the train station in Hamburg, a man approaches a father and son and yells 'Mendelssohn' before the fiddler begins playing a tune. Walter and Chris observe the peculiar scene and decide to leave quickly. Chris also spots a woman named Clara during the retreat.

The next day, they try to meet The Colonel, Walter's old boss. The fiddler and another agent close in, forcing Walter to flee in a car and then on foot. Cornered near a pier, Walter jumps onto a passing ferry while the pursuing agents continue the chase; the assassin kills the fiddler as the escape unfolds, and Chris later rescues Walter.

At The Colonel's, they recall 'Operation Clean Sweep' and how five of six agents were killed. The Mendelssohn tune is revealed to be the code for Schroeder, the agent who escaped this purge. The revelation deepens the conspiracy and indicates Schroeder’s continued involvement.

Walter heads to West Berlin to a pension while Chris heads toward Frankfurt to stay safe. The separation underscores the widening geographic scope of the pursuit and the growing danger they face from unknown enemies. Their paths diverge as the investigation intensifies.

The assassin visits the Colonel and brutalizes him for information about the Lloyds. The Colonel's caretaker betrays nothing, but the assassin kills both the caretaker and the Colonel’s sense of security. The scene heightens the sense that powerful forces are closing in on the family.

At the train station, Chris spots Carla again, who claims she is headed to Berlin to stay with friends. Chris decides to change his travel plans and head to Berlin with Carla, setting the stage for a risky reunion. The decision further complicates loyalties and motives among the key players.

That night, Chris and Walter converge near a café close to Walter's pension. Carla appears and complicates their plan; an assassin enters the apartment, but Walter shoots him dead. Chris fights Carla and then flees with Walter, continuing the dangerous escape sequence.

Walter heads into East Berlin and is picked up by a courier who takes him to a farm. Schroeder appears and claims his family was murdered by the CIA, hinting at deeper conspiracies. Walter remains wary, suspecting that the puzzle involves more than a single faction.

Chris goes to an abandoned air force base as instructed by Walter; he reaches a hangar where Donna is bound and wrapped in plastic explosives. Walter and the CIA agent Clay work to defuse the bomb, but Taber, a double agent, shoots Clay dead. Schroeder returns, frees the Lloyds, and detonates the explosive together with Taber, ending the conspiracy’s immediate threat.
