Before Krypton was destroyed, General Zod, Ursa, and Non were sentenced to eternal banishment in the Phantom Zone. Their imprisonment strikes a significant blow to their malevolent ambitions, but it is not the end of their threat.

Years later, Superman hurls a hydrogen bomb into space, unintentionally disrupting the Phantom Zone. This act leads to the release of Zod and his allies, who now possess incredible powers from the yellow sun.
