Steve

The film closes on a day that has unravelled completely for Steve. After learning that the reform school will be sold and that the boys will have nowhere to go, the headteacher spirals into a bout of drinking and oxycodone, his hands shaking as he tries to keep a façade of control for the documentary crew. The stress leaves him hollow, and even his closest colleagues notice that he is no longer the steady leader they once knew.

Meanwhile, Shy – the teenager who has been battling his own demons – reaches the brink. He gathers a sack of stones and walks toward the lake, intending to drown himself. At the last moment he is jolted by the memory of Steve’s persistent belief in him, and instead of stepping into the water he hurls the stones through the school’s windows. The crash shatters the silence, forces the other students and staff to come running, and forces Shy to confront the fact that he still belongs to a community that cares.

Steve, already drunk, discovers the note Shy left in his room and, driven by a mix of panic and guilt, scrambles through the dark grounds to find him. He stumbles into a ditch and can barely move, but when he finally sees Shy return to the building, a wave of relief washes over him. In that fragile moment, Steve’s earlier sense of failure is momentarily overturned: he has, despite everything, saved a boy who thought he would end his own life.

The final sequence shifts to Steve’s house. His two daughters greet him as they leave for school, and his wife urges him to rest after a long, muddy day. Instead of sleeping, he reaches for a bottle of whisky and climbs up into the attic. The camera lingers on the narrow space, leaving it unclear whether he is hiding the bottle, packing his belongings to walk away, or simply confronting his own darkness alone. The recurring image of Durdle Door – the cliff‑side arch that has haunted Shy’s imagination – flickers in his mind, a reminder that hope can be a distant, yet reachable, horizon. The ending remains deliberately ambiguous, inviting viewers to wonder whether Steve will summon the strength to keep fighting for his students, or let the weight of his loss drive him toward an uncertain, solitary exit.
