At a dusty Soviet crossroads villagers surrender a horse, a samovar and a goat to the state. As the train departs, a physically and mentally disabled woman, barely able to speak, arrives. She crafts burr bracelets, studies herself in a cracked mirror, is shunned by most, and seeks refuge beneath a massive portrait of Stalin.
