Moritz Stiefel faces expulsion for poor grades and is blamed when an essay titled “Shame and Lust” is found – the work was actually written by classmate Melchior Gabor, based on his affair with the girl Wendla. When Wendla becomes pregnant, Stiefel descends into despair. Set in the 1920s, the film adapts Frank Wedekind’s play, exploring Eros versus Thanatos and, under Richard Oswald’s direction, critiques adult hypocrisy and double standards while probing youthful sexual longing.
