El Casper, known as Willy and portrayed by Edgar Flores, is a seasoned gang member tasked with initiating a young recruit. This recruit is affectionately nicknamed “El Smiley”—played by Kristyan Ferrer—after enduring a brutal initiation ritual. While El Casper navigates his violent world, he also harbors a secret romance with a girl named Martha Marlene, maintaining their relationship under wraps to protect her from the gang’s dangers.
One fateful day, Martha follows El Casper to a gang gathering, where the notorious leader Lil’ Mago (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) forcibly escorts her away, provoking a desperate reaction from El Casper. The situation escalates tragically when Lil’ Mago attempts to assault her and, in the ensuing chaos, accidentally takes her life. With an icy demeanor, he dismisses her death to El Casper, suggesting he can “find another,” which sends shockwaves through El Casper’s heart.
The plot thickens as Lil’ Mago brings both El Smiley and El Casper to a haunting locale called La Bombilla, where illegal immigrants often hide on trains heading to the United States. Among these immigrants is a family from Honduras, including a teenage girl named Sayra—a role taken by Paulina Gaitan—her father, and her uncle, who are on a treacherous journey to New Jersey to join relatives. The gang, led by Lil’ Mago, starts robbing the passengers until their eyes fall on Sayra.
Haunted by his own loss and monstrosity, El Casper intervenes when Lil’ Mago attempts to sexually assault Sayra. In a fit of rage and grief, he ends up killing Lil’ Mago in order to save her. Amidst the turmoil, Sayra grows curious about this mysterious figure. Smiley, in effort to prove his loyalty to his gang, divulges the events to the gang leader El Sol. Unnerved by Smiley’s hesitation, El Sol orders him after Casper, spiraling Smiley deeper into a violent path.
As the perilous train journey continues, El Casper takes it upon himself to guide fellow immigrants, sharing vital knowledge of when to evade immigration officers. He finds himself alongside Sayra’s family, only to wake up and discover that Sayra has trailed him. They escape together, attempting to avoid the clutches of the gang, particularly Smiley, who has become increasingly bloodthirsty in proving his allegiance.
Their journey leads them to an immigrant shelter, where Sayra anxiously asks for updates about her father and uncle, only to receive a devastating message with an unfortunate error in translation. This miscommunication turns a moment of hope into a grim misunderstanding, as Sayra smiles—unbeknownst to her, the subtitles suggest her father is deceased.
In a tense river crossing, El Casper uses his last cherished possession—a digital camera full of memories with Martha—to ensure Sayra crosses the river first. Just when it seems like they might find safety, fate takes a cruel twist. El Casper is confronted by the gang, culminating in a frantic chase that ends tragically on the riverbank, where Smiley shoots him.
In the aftermath, Sayra stands outside a bustling mall in the United States, clutching the phone number of her deceased father’s second family, symbolizing her hope for a new beginning. Meanwhile, Smiley earns his place in the gang by getting a tattoo that cements his fierce loyalty, ready to embrace the brutal, unforgiving world he has chosen.
