Commissioned by the Chogyal, the poetic documentary by Satyajit Ray examines Sikkim’s sovereignty amid perceived threats from China and India. When Sikkim merged with India in 1975 the film was banned by the Indian government, a restriction that remained until the Ministry of External Affairs lifted it in September 2010. The Academy Film Archive preserved the work in 2007.
