It follows M. Baudu, owner of a modest Parisian fabric shop in the 1860s, whose business is threatened when the city’s first department store opens across the street. Adding to his woes, his orphaned niece Denise and two nephews move in. Seeing the danger, Denise takes a job as a shop assistant for the rival store, a choice that brings success but strains family loyalties.
