Selfiee (2023) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Selfiee (2023), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

As Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) prepares for his exciting journey to the United States with his wife Naina (Diana Penty), an unexpected obstacle arises. The filming of his latest project, Falak Tak, has fallen behind schedule, leading to a critical budget overrun. To add to his woes, the crew discovers that Vijay’s driving license has mysteriously vanished, crippling their ability to secure the necessary clearance for a final shoot on Indian Navy-leased land. Frustration brews as producers express their outrage, with time slipping away quickly.

In a bid to assist Vijay, a politician friend steps in, reaching out to Inspector Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi), a Motor Vehicle Inspector in Bhopal, to expedite the licensing process. Om agrees to illegally issue the license without requiring Vijay to complete the usual tests, but he insists they meet personally at the RTO. There, Om requires proof of their meeting to offset any potential inquiries that might arise.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s professional adversary, Suraj Diwan (Abhimanyu Singh), devises a nefarious scheme to stifle Vijay’s success, even resorting to occult practices. Despite his reservations about the RTO visit exposing him, Vijay reluctantly decides to go, hoping for an undisturbed session since the visit had not been widely publicized.

Upon arriving, however, he is greeted by a chaotic media storm, with reporters jostling for the scoop. Vijay’s peon, Vimla (Chittaranjan Tripathy), inadvertently misinforms a journalist that Vijay, an enthusiastic driver, has been operating a vehicle without a license. This outburst of misinformation ignites public outrage, prompting Vijay to confront Om, who he believes is responsible for the leak, leading to an explosive confrontation that ultimately makes its way to the press. Enraged by the accusations of arrogance, Om retaliates by revealing to the media that Vijay sought a license without adhering to proper procedures, causing further damage to Vijay’s once-sterling reputation.

As the situation escalates, Suraj’s fan group retaliates by staging a brutal hit-and-run attack on Om’s home, injuring his son in the chaos. This horrifying event leads Om to incorrectly assume that Vijay’s followers are to blame, further complicating an already volatile situation. Reluctantly, Vijay cancels his much-anticipated trip to the US under pressure from the producer and hurries his injured son to the hospital. His frustration boils over during a heated phone call with Om, exacerbating the already tense atmosphere surrounding them. When police investigations begin, both Om and his supporter Minty point fingers at Vijay, though no conclusive evidence emerges tying him to the turmoil.

Undeterred, Om stages a peaceful protest outside Vijay’s residence, drawing media attention and fanfare. As cameras roll, Vijay seizes the moment to publicly declare Om as a zealous stalker who relishes in aggravating his idol’s life, providing proof of Om’s fanmail as evidence. In a dramatic twist, Vijay announces he will retake the driving test under Om’s supervision, shifting the format to a direct Q&A session instead of the computer-based assessment.

Tensions escalate further when Om’s son becomes a target of bullying at school due to Vijay’s loyal fans, prompting Om to keep him home until Vijay flunks the driving test. Amid this, Naina faces a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery, heightening the pressure on Vijay to perform well on his upcoming driving test.

On the day of the practical assessment, Vijay navigates the “H test” with skill, yet Om, ever the stickler for details, critiques him for minor oversights. Fortunately, Om’s superior intercedes, allowing Vijay to pass. Just when he believes his troubles are behind him, Om schedules a follow-up “road test” for noon the next day, coinciding with Naina’s surgery.

As Vijay declares to the assembled crowd that he will forgo driving forever if Om persists with his relentless testing, the fans and media are left in shock. When Om’s supporters turn against him, attempting to physically assault him, Vijay heroically intervenes, shielding Om from their wrath as he makes a swift exit.

In a surprising turn of events, Vijay discovers a long-standing misunderstanding: Om had been holding onto his driving license all along, having accidentally mixed it with a previous gift for him at the RTO. With this revelation, Vijay invites Om and his family to his home, where he reproaches Suraj and Vimla for their careless actions. A couple of days later, as Vijay prepares to head to the airport, he addresses the press, happily announcing that he has reconciled with Om and reclaimed his driving license. With a newfound sense of freedom and closure, Vijay jumps into his vehicle and departs for the airport, leaving behind the chaos of the past in his rearview mirror.

Ending Explained – What Happens at the End of Selfiee?

Still wondering what the ending of Selfiee (2023) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.

In the finale of Selfiee, the story closely mirrors the original film Driving Licence but with some notable differences that highlight character arcs and thematic nuances. Vijay Kumar, the superstar, successfully passes the driving and verbal tests, but instead of the dramatic press conference seen in the Malayalam version, he simply embraces Om Prakash and reassures the media that they are united, cutting short any elaborate statements. This act signifies that Vijay has come to terms with the ordeal, choosing a straightforward message of unity over spectacle. Interestingly, the film concludes with a montage of selfies capturing stars with their fans, emphasizing the film’s commentary on celebrity-fan relationships and the obsession of social media culture.

Another significant change is the handing over of the driver’s license. In Driving Licence, a drunken auto rickshaw driver, Agasthi, delivers the license, adding a comedic and absurd touch. In Selfiee, Om Prakash personally hands the license to Vijay, which is more meaningful because Om has been the unintentional catalyst of the entire conflict, and this moment symbolizes his recognition of Vijay’s integrity and effort. The ending thus underscores themes of redemption and mutual respect, ratified through this symbolic gesture. Though the climax echoes the original, these subtle alterations deepen the story’s messages about ego, humility, and genuine acknowledgment in relationships, both personal and professional. Overall, Selfiee wraps up on a note of reconciliation, with the stars and fans, and the film industry, all intertwined in a celebration of authentic human connection rather than superficial fame.
