Lorry Jones entertains soldiers at the USO canteen in Missoula, Missouri, performing as a singer and signing photographs. She routinely receives marriage proposals from the men, especially Marine Sergeant George Davis, who does not realize her real intentions.

Lorry and her best friend Kay Pritchett have accepted stenographer jobs in Washington, D.C., but they tell the soldiers they’re departing on a USO tour. The lie hides their real plan to relocate and start new lives.

The night before leaving for Washington, D.C., Lorry and Kay celebrate in New York City. The party foreshadows the glamour and trouble that will follow as their identities blur with the men they meet.

The women arrive in New York by train and are welcomed by Navy hero Tommy Dooley, famed from Guadalcanal. This reunion sets the stage for the ensuing mistaken-identity encounters in the club scene.

That night, Lorry claims she has escorts to gain entry to Club Chartreuse. She tells Eddie Hall, the club owner, that she’s meeting Tommy and his friend, Dud Miller, unaware that Eddie is Tommy’s best friend. Eddie treats them to champagne as the situation becomes a blind-date misunderstanding.

When Tommy and Dud arrive, Tommy suspects Eddie has arranged a blind date for them, while Dud believes the women are actresses. The tension rises as the truth seems to almost surface.

Kay blurts out the Broadway claim, but Lorry, posing as Laura Lorraine, sings a song and proves she can perform. Molly McKay remains skeptical until Laura's performance confirms the cover.

Lorry and Kay finish the night dancing with Tommy and Dud and depart for Washington, D.C. the next morning. In the process, the men misplace the women's address, adding to the confusion.

Two weeks pass with no word from their beaus. This silence leaves Lorry and Kay insulted and anxious about their prospects.

Tommy and Dud arrive in Washington, D.C., and Lorry is assigned as Tommy's stenographer, while trying not to reveal her real career. She decides to disguise herself to keep her double life hidden.

Lorry creates a persona, Laura Lorraine, and arranges a date between Tommy and 'Laura' to keep her secret. During the date, Tommy admits he loves dating an actress, leaving Lorry hurt.

Tommy offers Laura a job at Eddie's club, further entangling Lorry's two identities. Molly grows jealous when she learns the truth about Lorry.

Molly introduces George to Tommy, who is insulted when he learns Lorry's identity. Lorry tells George she has no intention of marrying him.

Laura, dressed as Lorry, visits Tommy to persuade him to give 'Laura' another chance, but the plan backfires. Lorry finally reveals both identities, and Tommy forgives her.
