Anne reads Shakespeare in her room when she hears distress from the next room. A Spanish girl pleads that her brother Juan has been killed by dark forces. Anne quickly realizes there is a larger mystery entangling her with the people around her.

Philip, an unstable American refugee from McCarthyism, gets drunk and slaps Terry, accusing her of causing Juan's death by breaking up with him.
