In the quaint New England town of Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts, a young boy named Norman Babcock possesses a remarkable ability: he can converse with the dead. This extraordinary talent allows him to communicate with his late grandmother and many ghosts residing in the town. Tragically, his family and friends refuse to accept his gift, leading to profound feelings of isolation as he faces ridicule and bullying from his peers.
Despite his struggles, Norman forges a friendship with Neil Downe, an eccentric and overweight boy who also faces his own share of bullying. Neil finds solace in Norman's honesty about being a medium, and they develop a bond through their shared experiences. Their journey takes a dramatic turn during a rehearsal for a school play designed to commemorate the witch trials that took place in their town 300 years prior. During this rehearsal, Norman experiences a haunting vision of the past where he himself is chased by townsfolk as if he were a witch.
