Starring an all‑Black ensemble, the film follows comedian Lem Anderson, who yearns to perform Shakespeare but is limited to a role in Harlem’s vaudeville circuit. After witnessing a crime, he draws the attention of a mobster who warns him to leave town, forcing Lem to confront his ambitions and survival.
