Oysher, a modest village cantor, dreams of becoming an opera singer. He leaves his home to chase the ambition, but when his voice fails he returns, resigned to attend Yom Kippur services without singing. News of his son's death triggers a miracle: his voice returns, more powerful than before. He leads the Day of Atonement service, then collapses peacefully, joining his son in death.
