Out of Liberty Timeline Explained: Your Questions Answered

When does it happen, and why in that order? The questions people ask about the chronology of Out of Liberty (2019): time jumps, flashbacks, cause and effect between scenes and the correct order of events, each answered with spoilers.

Q1

Why did the first escape attempt from Liberty Jail fail?

The first escape attempt in Out of Liberty failed because Lyman Wight was too sick to make it out the door. Rather than abandon a vulnerable companion, the prisoners decided they could not leave without him, and the plan collapsed before it truly began.

Foreshadowing: Wight's weakness during the early breakout foreshadows the group's loyalty to one another, which repeatedly forces them to abandon escape plans throughout Out of Liberty.

  • liberty jail
  • escape plan
Q2

Why did Samuel Tillery defend the prisoners from the mob?

Tillery defended the prisoners because his duty as deputy jailer required him to keep them alive until their day in court. Despite the angry Liberty mob wanting frontier justice, he stood his ground outside Liberty Jail and prevented them from breaking in and killing the prisoners.

Foreshadowing: Tillery's early willingness to shield the prisoners foreshadows his later moral crisis and his eventual decision to release them in Out of Liberty.

  • mob
  • frontier justice
  • liberty jail
Q3

How did Sidney Rigdon get released while the other prisoners stayed in jail?

During the court of inquiry held at a schoolhouse, Sidney Rigdon chose to represent himself and successfully persuaded Judge Turnham to release him. The other prisoners could not mount a similar defense and were returned to Liberty Jail to await their treason trial.

  • sidney rigdon
  • court of inquiry
  • judge turnham
  • release
Q4

Why was the court of inquiry held in a schoolhouse instead of the courthouse?

The court had to be moved to a schoolhouse because an armed mob blocked the prisoners from being brought into the actual courthouse. Even at the schoolhouse, the mob followed and threatened both the judge and the prisoners, forcing the proceedings to continue under extreme danger.

  • court of inquiry
  • schoolhouse
  • courthouse
  • mob
  • trial
Q5

What was the revelation Joseph Smith received in Liberty Jail?

In a moment of deep despair, Joseph Smith turned to prayer and asked God for guidance. He received comfort and direction through revelation, and this experience was later canonized in the Doctrine and Covenants as one of the most significant spiritual texts in Out of Liberty's historical record.

Foreshadowing: The earlier failed escape attempts and the despair over the destroyed tunnel set the emotional stage for Smith's turn to prayer in Out of Liberty.

  • joseph smith
  • revelation
  • doctrine and covenants
  • prayer
Q6

Why did the prisoners' tunnel escape attempt fail?

The tunnel escape failed because the jailers eventually discovered the prisoners' secret digging. After weeks of hidden work, the escape hole was filled in by the Liberty Jail authorities, ending the third and most ambitious escape attempt without the men ever leaving the building.

  • tunnel escape
  • digging
  • liberty jail
  • third escape attempt
Q7

Why did Samuel Tillery eventually let the prisoners escape?

After the final showdown between the mob, the jailer, and the prisoners, Tillery came to believe that true justice might be better served outside the courtroom. His repeated exposure to mob brutality and the prisoners' suffering shifted his loyalties, leading him to allow them to escape from his custody in Out of Liberty.

Foreshadowing: Tillery's hesitation during the earlier mob confrontations hints that his commitment to enforcing the law was already fracturing.

  • samuel tillery
  • escape
  • final decision
  • justice
Q8

What happened during the final showdown in Out of Liberty?

As the prisoners were being transported to another jail for trial, a confrontation erupted between the mob, the jailer, and the prisoners themselves. After this tense standoff, Tillery made the decision to release the prisoners rather than deliver them into continued danger.

Foreshadowing: The mob's persistent presence at every prior hearing foreshadows that the final transport would also be ambushed.

  • final showdown
  • transport
  • mob
  • confrontation
Q9

What role did Porter Rockwell play in the escape attempts?

Porter Rockwell first visited the prisoners to offer encouragement during their early imprisonment, then returned later with tools that allowed them to begin tunneling out of Liberty Jail. This support enabled the third and most ambitious escape attempt, though the tunnel was eventually discovered and filled in.

Q10

Who were the prisoners held in Liberty Jail?

  • joseph smith
  • lyman wight
  • sidney rigdon
  • prisoners
Q11

What crimes were Joseph Smith and the other prisoners charged with?

  • treason charges
  • court of inquiry
  • missouri
  • prisoners
Q12

Why couldn't the prisoners be brought to the courthouse safely?

The mob's persistent threats forced the court to relocate to a schoolhouse and ultimately shaped every decision about how the prisoners could be moved in Out of Liberty.

  • courthouse
  • mob
  • prisoners transport
  • safety
Q13

What happens to Joseph Smith after he escapes from Liberty Jail?
