In 1995, Perry Miller performs with his punk band, The Skunks, on stage in New York. Their energetic performance features the song 'Devil's Kind,' and the band briefly shares their thoughts in a pre-show interview.

Fast forward twenty years, Perry's life has transformed significantly. He is now a father of two and is navigating the complexities of family life with his wife, Karen, and their children, including a newborn and their guitar-playing daughter, Salome.

On the day of Salome's talent show, Perry realizes that his birthday has been forgotten by his family. This discovery leaves him feeling neglected and disappointed, making him reflect on his past life.

While picking up a guitar for Salome, Perry has a conversation with his younger brother, Jake, who runs the family hardware store. The two have a tense exchange, with Jake criticizing Perry's lack of ambition, but he eventually provides Perry with the day off and gives him $1000 to lift his spirits.

Perry decides to reclaim a piece of his past by organizing a reunion for The Skunks at a hotel. After securing the presidential suite, he bumps into Christy, an old flame, who is now managing Joan Jett's performance in New York.

After receiving a warning about the hotel's strict 'no-party' policy, Perry tries to connect with his former bandmates. However, chaos ensues when his drummer, Gary, impulsively invites a stripper and other guests to the suite, disappointing Perry.

Amidst the party, Perry faces criticism from Karen’s parents regarding his life choices. The pressure mounts when a misunderstanding at a family business meeting leads Perry to feel betrayed by Jake, who initiates a buyout of his share.

Returning to an overrun hotel suite, Perry confronts Gary about the party situation. Gary’s belief that Perry has become no fun escalates their tension, resulting in Perry retreating to his room for a much-needed nap.

After his nap, Perry has an emotional conversation with Christy about their past. He decides to share a song he wrote, 'Ordinary World,' which reflects his struggles and aspirations, before being called back to the chaotic party.

As the night continues, Perry's excitement turns sour when he discovers that he has been replaced by another singer in The Skunks. His rage culminates in a destructive moment where he breaks Salome's guitar, leading to further consequences.

Following the chaos of the party, the police arrive to disperse the crowd, resulting in Perry being handcuffed. He confronts Gary about betrayal, only for his connection with the police chief to secure his release.

Despite the turmoil, Perry rushes to support Salome at her talent show, foregoing an opportunity to perform for Joan Jett. His commitment to his daughter takes precedence as he navigates the consequences of the previous night.

Perry arrives just in time to witness Salome perform an acoustic version of 'Unsatisfied' by The Replacements using his old guitar. This touching moment highlights Perry's deep connection to his daughter and the sacrifice he has made.

After the talent show, a conversation with Karen reveals that Perry’s actual birthday is the following day. The misunderstanding brings a mix of relief and frustration as they clear the air concerning the day's earlier events.

The next day, in a heartfelt gesture, Perry trades his beloved old guitar for a limited edition electric guitar for Salome. As they leave the store, Perry bonds with her, excitedly asking what music they should listen to, deepening their relationship.
