In 1945 Zagreb, the city adjusts to a new communist regime. Wealthy war‑hero widow Matilda takes a boarder, Lt. Horvat, a housing officer who also places his fiancée Lilijana in her apartment. Matilda is soft‑spoken and affluent; Lilijana is lean, revolutionary, and pregnant. Horvat is attracted to both, but his commander learns of the affair and forces him to choose between his career and his love.
