Night of the Big Heat

The remote island of Fara sits isolated off the English coast, a place where the sea wind usually carries the bite of a bitter winter. One night, the island is swallowed by an impossible heatwave that pushes the mercury into the nineties, turning familiar streets into shimmering corridors and leaving everyday objects strangely volatile. The atmosphere becomes thick with a palpable unease; the usual clatter of a sleepy community is replaced by the low hum of a world that feels suddenly out of step with the season, hinting at a menace that is both natural and uncanny.

Jeff Callum is a professional novelist who, together with his wife Frankie Callum, runs The Swan, an inn perched on the edge of the sea. Their routine life begins to fray when Jeff hires a new secretary, Angela Roberts, a younger woman who once shared an affair with him. Her arrival stirs old memories and new tensions, casting a shadow over the couple’s attempt to find solace from mainland tedium. Into this charged environment steps Godfrey Hanson, an aloof scientist from the mainland who rents a room at the inn. He spends his days recording the island’s oddities, his quiet demeanor suggesting he may perceive something that the locals cannot yet articulate.
