In the enchanting, snow-covered Alaskan town of Mystery, young Stevie WEEKS is showcasing his impressive skating skills on the river. Meanwhile, town sheriff JOHN Biebe (played by Russell Crowe) is having trouble starting his car alongside his two sons. His wife, DONNA (Mary McCormack), suggests he use the snowmobile since she’s waiting for an important mail delivery, which includes a much-anticipated article in Sports Illustrated about their town.
As John and his sons navigate the snowy landscape, they stop by the house of BAILEY Pruitt (Maury Chaykin) to lend a hand with some shoveling. After finishing the chore, Bailey wishes John luck for the game later that day. When SKANK Marden (Ron Elder) shares his escapades with a local girl named Sarah, it leads to crude comparisons that stir both laughter and irritation.
