Demetrio leaves Sicily because his marriage to Rosalba has become unbearable. After their wedding, Rosalba attempts to transform him into a modern, egalitarian husband by pushing high society rituals and feminine habits. Demetrio, who values traditional gender roles, feels his autonomy is being stripped away. The constant friction drives him to seek a relationship on his own terms, leading him to the Amazon where he hears he can purchase a compliant wife.

Rosalba's transformation reflects her vision of an ideal modern marriage. After the wedding, she decides to reshape Demetrio into what she considers a contemporary husband, someone who embraces enlightened tastes, high society customs, and a more egalitarian partnership.
