A resilient woman, daughter of a thief, is sent to a nunnery after her mother’s execution. Abuse by a priest drives her to flee into London’s dangerous streets, where she becomes a prostitute for the scheming Mrs. Allworthy. There she meets Hibble, a kind servant, and later falls for an unconventional artist who offers hope of true love.
