During a hot summer evening, the Count leaves his estate, leaving his daughter Julie behind. Julie, the last of her noble family, finds herself alone with the servants, recently heartbroken after an engagement is broken. She dances and drinks with the staff, but struggles to be accepted by them. Later, she encounters Jean, the Count’s valet, a handsome man with anarchist leanings who despises the class system but aspires to rise above it. As they drink and talk, their conversation becomes increasingly intense and revealing. Drawn to each other, they hide in Jean's small room, where he seduces Julie, leading to a passionate and complex encounter.
