Manuel and Clemente, a scheming duo, exploit reports of Virgin apparitions near El Palmar de Troya in 1968. They rally financial backers and gullible believers, using the phenomenon to fund a grand basilica, their own order of nuns, priests, bishops, and even a self‑styled Pope Gregory XVII. The film satirizes the odd birth of the Palmarian Catholic Church.
