Lelia Cohanovici, a young Jewish woman from the capital, falls in love with the Christian Matei Frunză, despite her parents Nissim and Esther’s plans for her to marry fellow‑Jew Emil Horn. Grandfather Manasse, the family’s spiritual leader, travels from Fălticeni for the wedding, but Lelia flees on the ceremony day to be with Matei. Gradually the family accepts their union, though the obstinate Manasse dies broken by his failure.
