Maldone works on the canals, happy after abandoning his family estate. At a local fete he falls for Zita, a young gypsy girl. When his brother dies, he is summoned back to run the estate, assumes the role of landowner and marries a neighbor’s daughter. Years later, still restless, he reunites with Zita one evening and becomes obsessed with her.
