In 1948, the spoiled playboy Merrick, Robert Taylor, careens through a reckless speedboat ride that ends in a crash, leaving him badly injured. Rescue teams race across the lake to reach the nearest resuscitator kept in the house of Dr. Phillips. As the resuscitation works to save Merrick, the doctor suffers a heart attack and dies. Merrick becomes a patient at Phillips’s clinic, where the staff quietly resent him for triggering the disaster that claimed a life, even if indirectly.
Helen Hudson, Irene Dunne, Dr. Phillips’s widow, endures a flood of calls, letters, and visitors offering to repay loans Phillips had declined during his life. Edward Randolph, Ralph Morgan, a famed artist and close friend of the physician, helps Helen understand the meaning behind Phillips’s famous phrase that “it was already used up,” and why her husband left so little money despite a thriving practice. > it was already used up.
From the hospital ward, Merrick begins to grasp why others dislike him: his rough edges and the aura of danger that followed the accident. He escapes the clinic, only to collapse in front of Helen’s car, and is brought back to care, deepening the connection between them.
After his discharge, Merrick parties hard, gets drunk, and then finds himself at Edward Randolph’s home. Randolph speaks of the secret belief that powered his own art and Phillips’s success, urging Merrick to adopt a similar philosophy. The idea unsettles Helen, and Merrick resolves to change his life. Yet when he tries to make amends, Helen steps into the path of a car to avoid him and is left blind.
Determined to honor the memory of Phillips, Merrick embraces a sober, purposeful path and trains to become a doctor himself, even as he falls in love with Helen. He helps her adapt to blindness under the guise of Robby, a poor medical student who acts as her confidant and guide.
Seeking to give Helen every chance, Merrick secretly arranges for her to travel to Europe to consult with the world’s best eye surgeons. After extensive testing, the doctors tell Helen there is no hope for recovery. Soon after, Robby appears at her hotel to offer emotional support and she realizes his true identity. Merrick asks Helen to marry him, but that night she fears becoming a burden and runs away.
Years pass, and Merrick becomes a dedicated and successful brain surgeon who quietly continues his philanthropy and keeps searching for Helen. One evening, Randolph arrives with news that Helen is gravely ill in a small Southwest hospital. Merrick reaches her bedside and performs a demanding brain operation to save her life. After a long night of waiting for the outcome, Helen awakens, discovers she can see again, and reunites with Merrick.
