In a remote Russian town a magical research institute is home to witch Alyona Sanina, who plans to marry the ordinary Ivan Puhov. Jealous sorcerer Apollon Sataneev deceives their superior, the powerful witch Kira Shemahandskaya, claiming Alyona will wed Ivan Kivrin—Shemahandskaya’s own intended. Infuriated, Shemahandskaya orders Alyona to forget Puhov and marry Sataneev, unless Alyona can kiss Puhov before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Her friends rush to rescue her.
