Set in a bleak Northern England, the film follows Jimmy Porter, a frustrated jazz musician consumed by anger and resentment towards societal norms. His turbulent personality and sharp tongue are challenged when his wife, Alison, a woman from a privileged background, invites her charming friend Helena to their home. As Helena becomes entangled in their volatile relationship, long-simmering tensions and unspoken desires threaten to shatter their fragile existence and ignite a destructive cycle of rebellion and recrimination.
