Gilbert, his brother Boule and a circle of friends linger in the provincial town of Estaque, drifting through petty theft, aimless carelessness and a pervasive social gloom that makes them feel like outcasts. Convinced this will be his final summer there, Gilbert’s idle days are shaken when he begins a tentative romance with Josiane, a kind‑hearted worker, offering a glimmer of hope amid the bleakness.
