Life is difficult for Laika, a stray dog living outside a large Russian city. She is captured and undergoes forced training to become a pioneer in space exploration. Following her launch into orbit, other animals are hastily sent from Houston and Baikonur. These animals become lost in space, eventually using a black hole to colonize a distant planet. The initial period of peaceful co-existence with native life forms is disrupted when a human cosmonaut arrives, jeopardizing their survival.
