What Happens in La Balance: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of La Balance (1982) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Set against a rain-soaked Paris, Nicole Danet, Nathalie Baye is a sex worker whose life becomes entangled with Dédé Laffont, Philippe Léotard a former racketeer and her ex-pimp, and with the powerful mob boss Roger Massina, Maurice Ronet. When a police informant is killed, the authorities recruit Dédé to infiltrate Massina's circle. They raid Dédé's apartment, find a gun, and use this to blackmail him into becoming an informant, leveraging threats to push him deeper into the sting. The police aim to reach Massina and press him with Dédé as the inside man. Dédé agrees to participate in a setup and tries to win Massina back by claiming to have found a rich antique dealer to rob (part of the setup) and asking for Massina's help; Massina, tempted by greed, agrees and begins to reintegrate Dédé into his organization.

On the day of the heist, Dédé is replaced by Petrovic, Tchéky Karyo. Dédé attempts to call off the plan, but Le Belge, Gérard Baume wearing headphones, does not hear him and proceeds with the operation. As Le Belge blocks Massina's van, Petrovic grows suspicious and opens fire, killing civilians and nearly killing Le Belge—who is saved by his Walkman, which absorbs a bullet. Massina escapes, but Petrovic is chased and ultimately shot in the head by Le Capitaine, Bernard Freyd. The captain then orders his team to reload Petrovic's weapon.

Dédé corners Massina in an alley, overpowers him, and shoots him. Fearing retaliation, Dédé hides. Nicole, believing he is safer in custody, informs the police, who arrest him. She watches from a car as he is taken away, her tears mixing relief with fear. Throughout it all, Nicole's decision to inform the authorities adds a stark moral layer, showing how personal loyalty can collide with the pursuit of justice.

La Balance Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about La Balance (1982): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Dédé expelled from Massina's organization?

Dédé was expelled by Massina over a romantic dispute involving Nicole Danet, the prostitute who was both Dédé's former lover and ex-pimp's girlfriend. Massina cut Dédé off from the mob's activities because of this conflict, effectively pushing him outside the organization and creating the vulnerability that the police later exploit.

Foreshadowing: This earlier fracture directly sets up Dédé's willingness to cooperate with police, as he has already lost his criminal connections.

Q2

Why do the police recruit Dédé as an informant?

The police recruit Dédé after their previous informant is killed. They target Dédé specifically because he has existing connections to Massina's criminal organization, making him an ideal candidate to infiltrate the mob from the inside and provide inside information.

Foreshadowing: This recruitment is triggered by the Informant's death, which creates the power vacuum Dédé is meant to fill.

  • informant
  • recruit
  • dedé
  • massina
Q3

How do the police force Dédé into becoming an informant?

The police raid Dédé's apartment and find a gun. Using this evidence, they blackmail him into cooperating by threatening to charge him with illegal possession of a weapon. This leverage, combined with the threat of retaliation from Massina once Dédé is known as a police informant, forces him reluctantly into the deal.

Foreshadowing: The gun found during the raid becomes the key tool the police use to control Dédé throughout the film.

Q4

Why does Dédé propose the heist setup to Massina?

Dédé proposes the setup as part of the police's plan to re-enter Massina's inner circle. He tells Massina about a supposed rich antique dealer they could rob, using this false opportunity to win Massina's trust and reintegrate into the organization, all while working as a police informant.

Foreshadowing: This setup is the police's primary strategy to get close to Massina through Dédé.

Q5

Why is Petrovic substituted for Dédé on the day of the heist?

Massina replaces Dédé with Petrovic, his unhinged henchman, on the day of the planned heist. This substitution raises the danger level significantly because Petrovic is reckless and unpredictable, ultimately contributing to the operation's violent breakdown.

Foreshadowing: Petrovic's violent nature foreshadows the deadly outcome of the heist.

Q6

How does Le Belge's Walkman save him during the shootout?

When Petrovic opens fire during the heist, Le Belge is nearly killed. However, his Walkman absorbs a bullet that would otherwise have hit him, saving his life. This unlikely rescue is one of the more surreal moments in the film, highlighting the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the violence.

Q7

Why does Dédé try to call off the heist?

Dédé attempts to call off the plan because he wants to abort the operation, likely realizing the danger it presents. However, Le Belge, who is wearing headphones, does not hear Dédé's warning and proceeds with the operation anyway, forcing the raid to go ahead against Dédé's wishes.

Foreshadowing: This miscommunication is a critical moment that ensures the heist goes forward despite Dédéeffortsto stop it.

Q8

Why does Le Capitaine order his team to reload Petrovic's weapon?

After Petrovic is shot in the head by Le Capitaine, the captain orders his team to reload Petrovic's weapon. This action suggests the police want to make it appear that Petrovic was killed by his own gun during a struggle, covering up the fact that the captain executed him rather than capturing him alive.

Foreshadowing: This moment reveals the corrupt nature of the police, mirroring the criminal corruption they claim to be fighting.

Q9

Why does Nicole inform the police about Dédé's location?

Nicole informs the police about Dédé after he hides, fearing retaliation from Massina's remaining associates. She believes he will be safer in police custody than in hiding, even though this betrayal leads to his arrest. Her decision reflects the impossible moral choices characters face throughout the film.

Foreshadowing: Nicole's choice to betray Dédé to the authorities completes her arc of choosing safety over loyalty.

Dédé is forced into impossible choices, Nicolebetraysthe man she loves for his safety, and even the police engage in blackmail and cover-ups.
