Agustin, a widower beloved in his Aragon village, feels isolated and travels to the bustling city where his son, a renowned doctor, lives with his wife and daughter. The city family greets him coolly; his straightforward ways clash with their sophisticated lifestyle. He observes the melancholy undercurrents in his son's household, his daughter‑in‑law, and even the maid, finding the urban world too somber for a simple country man.
