Kudumbasree Travels

In the village of Chitirapuram, Aravindan Chakyar—better known as Aravi—is a gifted exponent of Chakyarkoothu, a traditional Kerala art form that blends dance, drama, and storytelling. His parents wish to see him married, but they set a single condition: the chosen bride must also be an accomplished performer of Chakyarkoothu. Aravi’s uncle, Chachu, embodies a scheming strand of local tradition. He schemes to marry Aravi off to his own daughter so he can siphon a share of the family wealth, yet Aravi and his parents see through his games and stay wary of his manipulation.

Aravi’s friend and marriage broker, George Kutty, brings a potential match to the table. Aswathy is a dancer and a fellow exponent of Chakyarkoothu, hailing from a city seat of wealth and tradition. When Aravi meets her, a connection seems likely, and the engagement is set, much to Chachu’s consternation.

The wedding party—comprising Aravi, Aswathy, and a larger ensemble of villagers—boards a bus named Kudumbasree Travels and travels toward the city. Chachu tags along, intent on stalling the marriage, and he is joined by Nettar, an astrologist promised a handsome fee for his meddling.

Meanwhile, in Kochi, a girl named Sridevi, whose policeman father has been kidnapped, is on a mission of her own. Waiting for a bus, she is mistaken for Hemalatha, a local figure, and decides to pose as Hemalatha to ride with the wedding caravan.

In Kochi, Aswathy’s cousin returns with the aim of marrying Aswathy himself. He learns that the wedding has already been fixed and plots with his ally Adiyodi to wreck the alliance. On the big day, delays compound the tension: a strict Kerala tradition requires the wedding to occur within a Muhurtham, the auspicious moment. Fears of bad luck lead Aravi and his team to scramble for a second Muhurtham, but the cousin resorts to a drastic move—injecting a drug into Aravi to knock him unconscious.

Nettar also tries to profit from the chaos by swapping Hemalatha’s bag with an identical one, hoping to grab the money inside. During the commotion, Aravi collides with Sridevi/Hemalatha, and a hotel caretaker snaps a photo of the moment. The shot is weaponized to claim Aravi is having an illicit affair, setting off a scandal that cancels the wedding.

Despite the setback, Aswathy remains steadfast in her trust of Aravi and chooses to elope with him. Simultaneously, Sridevi also departs with her own plan, and the two couples vanish. The truth about Hemalatha slowly comes to light, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

Aswathy, driven by her cousin and Adiyodi’s scheming, initially appears to be steered toward an arranged path with the cousin. She escapes and reunites with Aravi, and together with Aravi’s ensemble, they mount a bold rescue mission to free Sridevi’s father from her captors. The group’s unity under pressure proves crucial as they press forward.

Nettar trails Sridevi to seize the money bag, and when everyone finally converges, a chaotic chase ensues. Aravi, frustrated, wrests control of the bag and discards it, only to discover it contains a bomb. The sight unsettles Nettar, who quickly descends into madness. Sridevi and her father express their gratitude to Aravi before continuing on their way.

With danger behind them, Aravi and Aswathy search for a temple to seal their vows. When no temple presents itself, they decide to wed in front of a row of idols, which are for sale but hold symbolic significance for the couple. Aswathy’s family arrives, acknowledging that they know about Chachu and the cousin’s sabotage, and, with the blessing of everyone, Aravi and Aswathy are married. The newlyweds then depart for Aravi’s village aboard Kudumbasree Travels, joined by their friends and the wider community who celebrate a hard-won union.
