Judge Tian mourns his daughter, killed by a hit‑and‑run, in a northern Chinese city in 1997. Presiding over mechanic Qiuwu, accused of stealing two cars, his grief leads him to apply an almost‑obsolete death‑penalty law. Desperate, Qiuwu agrees to donate his kidney to a wealthy businessman, hoping his poor family will profit from his death.
