Helen and Jackson embark on a road trip to Jackson's childhood farmhouse in Kentucky, named Kilronan. The purpose of this visit is to introduce Helen to Jackson's mother, Martha, establishing a significant connection to Jackson's past.

After returning to New York City, Helen discovers that she is pregnant. When she shares the news with Jackson, he responds with a marriage proposal, which Helen gladly accepts, marking a major turning point in their relationship.

Helen and Jackson celebrate their wedding at Kilronan, where Helen also meets Jackson's paternal grandmother, Alice. During this gathering, Alice expresses her distrust of Martha, foreshadowing the familial tensions to come.

Back in their New York apartment, Helen is violently assaulted by a man who steals her locket. The situation escalates when the attacker learns about her pregnancy and inflicts a deep cut to her abdomen, although the fetus manages to survive the ordeal.

Martha informs Helen that she wants to sell Kilronan, citing her inability to manage it alone. In response, Helen expresses her desire to move back to Kentucky with Martha for a year to help renovate the farmhouse, leading to further complications.

During their time in Kentucky, Jackson confides in Helen about the trauma from his childhood. He reveals that he feels responsible for his father's death, which occurred in the very house they are trying to renovate, locked in emotional conflict over the past.

Suspicious of Martha's intentions, Helen speaks with Alice, who reveals new information about Jackson's father's death. Alice clarifies that it was a freak accident and not the result of Jackson's actions, shedding light on Jackson's misguided guilt and family secrets.

That evening, Martha bakes a cake for Helen, but the cake is secretly laced with pitocin, intended to induce labor. When Helen wakes up the next morning, she finds the eerie presence of a baby room, revealing Martha’s true intentions.

With Martha's assistance, Helen is forced into labor against her will. As she experiences intense pain and desperately calls for help, Martha tries to control the situation, fully consumed by her desire to keep the baby for herself.

Helen reveals to Jackson the painful truth about his father's death and Martha's manipulative nature. She presents evidence of Martha's attempt to murder her and claims that Jackson was manipulated into believing he was responsible for his father's accident.

After the confrontation, Jackson finally rejects Martha and decides to leave Kilronan. Helen and Jackson take their baby and leave, while a devastated Martha is left behind, broken and alone on the floor.

Before departing for good, Helen and Jackson pay a visit to Alice. They present her with her great-grandson, symbolizing the chance for new beginnings and a break from the oppressive legacy that Martha had created.
