In 1994, a tragic chapter in history unfolded when nearly one million Tutsi individuals were systematically murdered by Hutu soldiers, stemming from a violent dispute over land ownership. During this chaotic period, around 1,000 Tutsi refugees sought refuge within the walls of a luxury hotel in central Kigali, operated by Sabena Airlines. The man thrust into the role of protecting these vulnerable individuals was Paul Rusesabagina, played by Rhys Ifans, who worked tirelessly to shield the refugees from the multiple attacks by Hutu soldiers throughout this harrowing time.

“The Tutsi were collaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us. Now they have come back, these Tutsi rebels. They are cockroaches. They are murderers. Rwanda is our Hutu land. We are the majority. They are a minority of traitors and invaders. We will squash the infestation.”

Amidst this turmoil, Paul, who is a Hutu married to a Tutsi named Tatiana (portrayed by Salma Hayek), has a family comprising two daughters and a son. One fateful evening, upon returning home, he discovers that his wife’s brother is visiting with his family. An unsettling announcement from his son then shatters the temporary peace: soldiers are in the streets. Paul witnesses his defenseless neighbor being seized by Hutu soldiers, a sign of the horror that was soon to erupt.

As the night unfolds, Paul confronts the grim realities of his surroundings, where Hutu soldiers mercilessly burn the homes of Tutsi families, executing many innocents in the streets. Tatiana, in a desperate attempt to protect their Tutsi neighbors, begins to shelter them in their home. But when Hutu soldiers demand money and resources, Paul skillfully deceives them, claiming the refugees are his family. In a desperate bid, he secures their lives by offering $1,000 and some jewelry.

Amidst this atmosphere of fear and violence, David, a Scottish journalist, teams up with Jack, an American cameraman, to document the atrocities being committed against the Tutsi people. As reports of grisly murders reach them, the pair realizes the severity of the situation, capturing footage of Hutus savagely attacking Tutsis. Meanwhile, Colonel Oliver (depicted by [Nick Nolte]), a Canadian UN official, tries to assist by bringing in guards and saving those who can still be rescued. However, the ominous reports of Hutus targeting Tutsi children are a chilling reminder of the ongoing genocide.

In a cruel twist of fate, as efforts to evacuate the white population intensify, Paul and Tatiana grapple with dwindling supplies at the hotel, which has become an upscale refuge for Tutsi families. With food running low, Paul and a Hutu colleague named Gregoire (Tony Kgoroge) venture into dangerous territories controlled by Hutu soldiers, where they encounter horrifying sights, revealing the depth of brutality at play, including the sight of Tutsi women confined like cattle.

Facing extreme pressure, a Hutu lieutenant arrives one morning with orders to expel all the refugees from the hotel. But fortune favors Paul as he manages to receive a tip about Belgian soldiers en route to support them. Leveraging the situation, he makes urgent calls for help to influential contacts, eventually facilitating a few escape routes out of Rwanda. However, the threat remains ever-present, and the survival of Paul’s family hangs by a thread as they make risky decisions in a race against time.

As humanitarian efforts dwindle and the reality of their stark situation settles in—water supplies running out and the hotel’s environment becoming increasingly claustrophobic—Paul makes desperate decisions, grappling with the horrifying implications of their surroundings. The conflicts crescendo as Paul risks everything to keep his family safe, including devising a plan to pay off military officials who can help for a little while longer.

After heinous encounters involving the local military and a race against time, Paul ultimately faces the horrifying prospect of losing everything, sending his family away without him as loyal friends struggle to keep the uniforms and weapons at bay. The resulting chaos leaves them in a precarious position as the violence erupts around them.

As Paul navigates this perilous line between life and death, he learns that Pat, an Australian Red Cross worker, is alive after all, and she works tirelessly to rescue the children left behind. A final call for action brings Paul and his family together once more, but not without tense moments as he, Tatiana, and their children fight for their lives against overwhelming odds.
