In the summer of 1986, Erfurt sisters Catrin and Maja finally receive a travel permit for their first holiday at Lake Balaton, unaware that Stasi agents are monitoring the resort for East Germans trying to flee. Catrin befriends Rudi, while Maja is drawn to the exclusive Balaton‑Residenz hotel and its charismatic Hungarian manager Tamás. A kiss stolen by Maja sparks rivalry, and their mother, fearing trouble, rushes to Hungary in a Trabant to bring them home.
