After their son Luke leaves for college on August 31, 2019, Kate Conrad, a former veterinarian, surprises her husband Drew with an unexpected second honeymoon in Zambia. Kate envisions her life as perfect, especially since they recently captured their family’s Christmas card photo. However, when Drew reveals he no longer loves her and is waiting for their son to go to college before ending their marriage, Kate is blinded by anger and promptly throws Drew’s belongings out of their apartment, marking an abrupt shift in their lives.
Traveling alone, she arrives in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. That evening, while dining at the hotel bar, she encounters Derek, who strikes up a conversation with her. Unimpressed with Derek’s initial attempt at friendliness, Kate vents about her predicament and storms off. The next day, at the charter flight for a resort destination, she is astounded to find that Derek is the pilot of the plane he’s affectionately named Kirk, after Captain Kirk from Star Trek. Their journey takes them over Africa’s oldest and largest game reserve, home to the magnificent big five species: Lions, Leopard, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, and Elephant.
In an unforeseen twist, Derek lands the plane in the bush after spotting a traumatized baby elephant whose mother has fallen victim to poachers. Urgently, he alerts the reserve authorities using his walkie-talkie, declaring that the orphaned elephant needs immediate assistance or it won’t survive the next 48 hours. Intrigued by the situation, Kate, who once trained as a veterinarian, offers her assistance to the rescue team when they arrive, opting to accompany the baby elephant back to the sanctuary instead of heading to her pre-planned 5-star lodge.
At the sanctuary, she meets Leslie, Derek’s South African girlfriend who is part of the foundation supporting the sanctuary, Lilayi. Kate fosters a deep connection with the elephant they rescued, affectionately named “Manu,” a name suggested by Derek’s friend Jonathan, which means “second son” in local parlance. Jonathan gives Kate an insightful tour of the sanctuary, introducing her to several elephants, including Chuma, Multisani, and Kasewe. Kate’s heart swells with joy when Manu begins to recover and regain his appetite, signaling a fighting chance for survival.
Derek operates tourist flights to support the sanctuary, and both he and Jonathan share a rich history of growing up on the reserve, their fathers having been wardens. The sanctuary has a unique approach where each elephant is assigned a handler, but they rotate to prevent strong attachments from forming. Due to her prior expertise in veterinary care, Kate is designated the camp doctor.
Missing out on her luxury safari, Derek proposes a tour of the reserve, and Kate soon finds herself falling in love with both the beauty of Africa and her growing bond with Derek. As they exchange heartfelt stories about their pasts, Kate opens up about her uncertain future, especially as Drew’s divorce papers reach her at the sanctuary. Just as she contemplates her life back home, her son Luke arrives for the holidays and expresses his discontent with his business studies, revealing a desire to pursue music instead. Despite Donald’s initial judgments, Kate ultimately supports him.
With tender emotions swirling between Kate and Derek, they share a brief romantic moment, interrupted by Leslie, who later confronts Derek about a portrait he painted of Kate. As Leslie seethes over Derek’s affections, she announces that funding for the sanctuary will dwindle by the New Year, placing its future in jeopardy.
Determined to make a difference, Kate returns to New York, where she rejuvenates her career as a vet and encourages Luke to follow his passions without hesitation. However, upon learning from Jonathan that the sanctuary’s funding issues persist, Kate spearheads a fundraising effort by reaching out to friends and even Drew, selling personal belongings to keep the sanctuary alive.
Derek misses Kate so profoundly that he renames his plane “Kate” and sends her the completed portrait he created. Realizing her current job isn’t fulfilling, Kate sells her apartment and purchases a one-way ticket back to Zambia to reunite with Derek and her beloved elephants. Eventually, they marry, but when the moment arrives to release Manu back into the wild, both Derek and Kate share tearful goodbyes, recognizing the urgent plight of the African elephant population, which has seen a dramatic decline of 62% in the last decade.
