Frank Fisher, a former musician, is devastated by the loss of his wife due to a biking accident. He struggles to cope with his grief while trying to run his failing vinyl shop, Red Hook Records, in Brooklyn.

As summer comes to an end, Sam Fisher is preparing to leave for the West Coast to pursue her pre-med studies. Despite her ambitions, she desires to spend more time with her girlfriend, Rose.

During a jam session together, Sam reveals that she has written a song called 'Hearts Beat Loud.' This moment sparks creativity as they stay up all night recording and mixing the track.

In a spur of the moment decision, Frank uploads their song 'Hearts Beat Loud' to Spotify without Sam's permission. The track unexpectedly goes viral, thrusting them into the spotlight.

Frank eagerly wants to form a music duo with Sam, but she remains focused on her medical career and hesitant to take on music. Undeterred, Frank whimsically names the band 'We're Not A Band.'

While grappling with her feelings for Rose, Sam secretly writes another song titled 'Blink (One Million Miles).' Meanwhile, Frank pours his emotions into a song named 'Everything Must Go,' reflecting his struggles.

Leslie, Frank’s landlady and a loyal customer, suggests revitalizing Red Hook Records by transforming it into a café. Frank, however, clings to traditional ways, refusing to embrace change.

A talent agent approaches Frank with an enticing offer for him and Sam to record together as a band. However, Sam firmly rejects the proposal during a heated confrontation about their late mother.
