What Is Heartbeat About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Heartbeat (1938) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

In the sun-drenched setting of a provincial grocery shop, Irénée Fabre lives a life defined by routine, yet fueled by a wildly ambitious imagination. Working alongside his uncle, Uncle Baptiste Fabre, Irénée is far more interested in the glamour of cinema than the mundane details of stocking shelves. He carries himself with an unearned self-importance, convinced that he is destined for the silver screen, complete with exotic cars and adoring fans. This delusion makes him a figure of gentle mockery in his small community, where his lofty aspirations clash with the humble reality of his daily existence.

The arrival of a film crew in town offers Irénée what he believes is his long-awaited chance. Desperate to be discovered, he relentlessly attempts to showcase his "talent" to the weary filmmakers, whose patience quickly wears thin. In a moment of frustration mixed with mischief, the crew decides to entertain themselves at his expense. They offer him a "contract," promising him a future in acting—a cruel prank designed to feed his vanity and send him on his way. Only Françoise, a compassionate member of the production team, sees the sincerity beneath his pompous exterior and urges him not to take the joke too seriously.

Undeterred by warnings and blinded by hope, Irénée accepts the fake offer as truth. He packs his bags and boards a train for Paris, leaving behind the only world he has ever known. The story captures the tension between his naive optimism and the harsh, cynical machinery of the film industry. As he heads toward the studio gates, armed with nothing but a fraudulent promise and an unshakable belief in himself, the stage is set for a collision between a dreamer's fantasy and the unpredictable nature of fate.
